It is easy to dismiss minor aches, occasional fatigue or a persistent cough as everyday inconveniences. But your body often gives early warning signals of conditions that are far more manageable when caught early. Here are ten symptoms you should never ignore.
1. Chest Pain or Tightness
Any chest discomfort — whether sharp, dull, pressing or radiating to the arm or jaw — must be evaluated as a potential cardiac emergency. Do not wait to see if it passes. Call emergency care immediately or visit Pragnya Hospital’s 24×7 Emergency Department.
2. Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing more than 5% of your body weight without trying over 6–12 months can indicate thyroid disorders, diabetes, gastrointestinal conditions or in some cases, cancers. A thorough evaluation can identify the cause early.
3. Persistent Cough (More Than 3 Weeks)
A cough that lingers beyond three weeks could be a sign of asthma, chronic bronchitis, acid reflux, TB or — in smokers — lung cancer. Our Pulmonology department provides complete respiratory evaluation including chest X-ray and pulmonary function tests.
4. Blood in Urine, Stool or Sputum
Blood in any bodily fluid is always significant. Blood in urine may indicate kidney stones, a UTI or a bladder condition. Blood in stool may point to haemorrhoids, ulcers or colorectal cancer. Blood in sputum may signal a respiratory infection or lung condition.
5. Severe or Sudden Headache
A headache described as ‘the worst of your life’ that comes on suddenly can be a sign of a subarachnoid haemorrhage — a medical emergency. Recurring severe headaches, especially with visual disturbances or vomiting, need neurological evaluation.
6. Shortness of Breath at Rest
Feeling breathless while sitting or lying down is not normal. This can be a symptom of heart failure, severe asthma, pulmonary embolism or anaemia. If breathing difficulty comes on suddenly, treat it as an emergency.
7. Changes in a Mole or Skin Lesion
Use the ABCDE rule — Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolution (change over time). Any mole or skin growth that changes should be evaluated by our Dermatologist promptly.
8. Weakness or Numbness on One Side
Sudden weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking on one side of the body are hallmark symptoms of a stroke. Remember FAST — Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call for help. Every minute matters — our Emergency Department is ready 24×7.
9. Swelling That Does Not Subside
Persistent swelling in the legs may indicate heart, kidney or liver problems. Swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin that does not resolve within 2 weeks needs specialist evaluation.
10. Extreme Fatigue Despite Adequate Rest
Feeling persistently exhausted even after adequate sleep can be a symptom of anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, depression or a range of other conditions. A blood panel and clinical evaluation can quickly identify the cause.
